Before the Carols and Coca-Cola…
Long before Santa slid down chimneys and holiday rom-coms saturated your screen, the Winter Solstice was already sacred.
Welcome to Yule — the original dark-season ritual. We’re talking fire, feast, forest, and folklore. It’s the root of so many “Christmas” traditions… and it’s older than most major religions.
🌲 So What Is Yule?
Yule (or Jul) traces back to Norse, Germanic, and Celtic cultures who marked the Winter Solstice — the longest night of the year — with fire, storytelling, and sacred gatherings.
It was a time to:
Honor the returning light
Feed the spirits (yes, all of them)
Burn what no longer served you
Feast like your life depended on it (because in winter… it kinda did)
Sound familiar? That’s because Yule gave us:✔️ The Yule log✔️ Mistletoe magic✔️ Evergreen trees as symbols of survival✔️ Candle rituals✔️ Gift-giving✔️ Even wassailing (the loud caroling part)
🔥 Burn What Needs to Go
One of the most powerful Yule practices was symbolic burning.Old worries, regrets, grudges — poof.
This wasn’t just a fireplace party. It was a spiritual reset.A quiet (or loud) moment to say:
“This ends now. I will not carry it into the new year.”
🔥 Sound like something you need this December?
You’re not alone.
🌌 Modern Yule, Modern You
Today, you don’t need to live in a forest or wear a fur cloak to celebrate Yule. You can honor it in small, sacred ways:
Light a candle in the dark
Write a burn letter (we’ve got a ritual for that)
Decorate your space with natural symbols
Journal what you're leaving behind — and what you're welcoming in
