How a Kindergarten Callback Became My Adult Boundary Spell

Updated: Sep 9

🧸 The Kindergarten Origin Story

There was a kindergarten class I used to sub for—wild and imaginative. It was always a few crayons short of chaos. One day, one of the littles refused to stop playing when we needed to transition. I looked at the rest of the class, smiled with my teacher voice, and said:

“Now what do we say, class?”

In perfect harmony, 25 tiny humans yelled back:

🗣️ “HOMIE DON’T PLAY THAT!”

It became our sacred callback. When someone was messing around? Homie didn’t play that. When someone was being slick? Homie didn’t play that. When someone was testing limits? You already know.

😒 Fast Forward: Same Shenanigans, Grown Edition

Flash forward to my life as an autistic widow, healer, and entrepreneur. Somehow, I’m still encountering people—grown men, mind you—trying the same shenanigans.

Charm over clarity. Inconsistency dressed up as “vibes.” They test my time, energy, and soul as if I haven’t seen this episode before.

And when I call them on it? They act surprised. Confused. As if the warning wasn’t in the syllabus from day one:

“Hi. I’m autistic and an educator. I will see you. I will teach you.”

🎶 Homie the Clown & 90s Hip-Hop Wisdom

Just like Homie the Clown from In Living Color, you’re not here for anyone’s manipulative scripts or emotional trickery.

The 90s taught us to recognize game. Here’s your mini playlist for the vibe:

🎧 Your Shenanigans Soundtrack:

  • “No Scrubs” – TLC

  • “Ain’t No Future in Yo’ Frontin’” – MC Breed

  • “Sound of da Police” – KRS-One

  • “Can’t Knock the Hustle” – Jay-Z ft. Mary J. Blige

  • “Break Yo’self” – Ice Cube

  • “U.N.I.T.Y.” – Queen Latifah

Let that bump while you take roll call on your boundaries.

🌱 The Importance of Boundaries

Boundaries are essential. They protect our energy and well-being. When we set clear boundaries, we communicate our needs. This is crucial, especially for those of us navigating trauma and neurodivergence.

I’ve learned that boundaries aren’t just about saying “no.” They’re about creating a safe space for ourselves. It’s about self-respect and self-care. When we honor our boundaries, we honor ourselves.

🧘🏽‍♀️ Final Thoughts

You are not here to teach every person who walks into your space. But if they ignore the syllabus and test you anyway?

“Now what do we say?”

Homie. Don’t. Play. That.
